With the pandemic going on, everyone’s daily life has been altered. For many of us, those changes include our training routines. Whether it be fewer training days a week, changes to how we train (i.e. less weights and more bodyweight work), or just bringing less intensity to our WODs, we must all accept ourselves for where we are at in our fitness. Just like all of you, I eagerly await the day we can all be back at Stealth, training side-by-side and pushing each other to be our best. But just like we don’t want to start a long workout with an all-out sprint, we must be careful not to jump back into our regular training routine with too much intensity. So how do we handle the return to normal...

Tell me if these situations sound familiar:

  1. You’ve been training regularly, eating better and feeling good. You decide that you’d like to cut a few pounds for vacation. Three weeks of misery eating nothing but salads and water and you’re down to your goal weight, but a weekend of “cheat meals” and you’re suddenly heavier than when you started!

  2. You’ve been successfully losing weight for months when you suddenly reach a plateau and the number on the scale won’t budge. You decide to cut more calories from your diet to keep the weight dropping but nothing changes. You do it again, telling yourself the hunger and fatigue is normal. However, I have found that this term seems to be misleading for many people. They see “superfood” and think “oh I can eat as much of this as I want and I’ll be healthy. Some example foods are blueberries, avocados, chia seeds, almonds, and acai. Now I’m not about to get into where the research stands on each of these and whether or not they’re healthy (hint: most claims are overstated or misrepresented). Unfortunately, the majority of these have enough fat or carbohydrates in...

Practice, Train, or Compete, what’s your focus today? Every time you enter the gym you should be asking yourself, what am I here to do: practice, train, or compete? Most of the time, we (coaches included) don’t think about this, and fall into competing without even realizing it. If you are checking the leader board, adding weight to be equal or better than the person next to you, or comparing your score to everyone else’s, you are competing. To train or practice is to remove the influence of others and focus on you. To train means you are focused on personal performance goals, while practice removes all focus on the performance measures and instead aims to learn, reinforce, or master proper...
